Meet Lucifer!

A co-worker of T’s has graciously donated a 1971 Raleigh Twenty to my growing stable.  Partly because his wife thinks it is too ugly to keep:

I’m naming him Lucifer because…. well…  he looks like hell.

He has gouges.

He has rust.

He has a crappy vinyl Brooks saddle. (Seriously, why did Brooks do that?)

He has grime and grunge.

He has yellowing tape holding his cables together.

He even has the number of the beast stamped on his frame.  Yes.  That’s his serial number: 1266651.  Which shouldn’t even be a valid serial number!  They are supposed to start with a letter and I isn’t a valid option!

BUT… he was a very generous gift, and I am going to have so much fun fixing him up!

It doesn’t photograph well, but this is what is left of his made in England sticker.  His hub says 71   9, which means it was made in September of 1971.  So he is doing pretty good for a old guy.  I’m also having a kind of bad day, so I could do with someone to bring a little light.

I can’t afford to fix him up just now….  But he is mine and I will keep him safe.  He will be a good project bike later.  At this point in my life, biking with Little Girl on a Twenty just wouldn’t be an option….  but it will be in a year or two!  That girl has already figured out her balance bike to the point where she scares me going down the driveway at high speed with her feet stuck out to the side and a big silly grin on her little face.

Plus it will likely take me that long to source cream tires in 20 x  1.75.
