First frost

September 14, 2011

Tonight I am expecting the first frost of fall.

I’m OK with that.  I am ready to be done with the garden.  Despite my best efforts, the tomatoes once again escaped their cages and took over the yard.  The beans…  Wow, did I pick the wrong variety of beans.  The ran all across their bed, took over the peas and made a break for the house.  And the worst part is that the beans got so leafy that I couldn’t really fight my way to the bottom of them to harvest any of them.

So, in honour of the first frost I have harvested as much as I can and pulled the rest.  I have a big basket of eggplant, two buckets of tomatoes and I have completely given up on the beans.  The carrots are safe against frost.  I left the corn standing.

I’m not expecting any corn.  I got everything in so late this year, I wasn’t really expecting much of anything.

I’m not looking forward to months of cold, but I was ready for all the work in the garden to be done.
